Jan 17 update

Dad was more awake today than in the past.   We tried to communicate, to determine if he needed anything or if he had questions.  We did not do so well since he still has the ventilator tube running through his mouth and he is not moving yet.  He tried to mouth words but we could not understand.  The hospital has a hand-held board that lists the most common questions and statements but that did not generate any response from him.

Erin did say, mostly in passing conversation, "I bet you want to get out of here" to which he suddenly nodded yes.  Oh boy.  We tried to explain his condition to him, that his lungs, although improving each day, do not have enough capacity to support his needs alone.  Despite his condition, he seems frustrated that he cannot leave.  In addition to the "inconvenience" of the ventilator, they are still poking his body and purging his lung every couple of hours which I am sure is driving his desire to leave.

Anyway, we are encouraging him to exercise by moving this arms and legs so that he can work towards eventually sitting up in bed and moving around.  A simple request that may take him quite some time to accomplish.
